For general information about driver/system compatibility, first read our hardware compatibility FAQ.
These are the minimum hardware requirements for visonysAirlock 4.x:
x86 (Intel/AMD)
- 2 GB RAM (1 GB for testing)
- 1 CPU > 2.5 GHz [Pentium4, Xeon, Athlon] or
1 CPU > 2.0 GHz [Opteron, Core2]
- 2 network interfaces > 10 MBit (1 interface for low security setup)
- 2x60 GB (1x40 GB for testing)
- DVD drive (v4.1 delivered on CDROM, but future versions may be shipped on dvd)
SPARC
- 2 GB RAM (1 GB for testing)
- 2 CPUs > 1.0 GHz or 1 CPU > 1.5 GHz [UltraSPARC IIIi or newer]
- 2 network interfaces > 10 MBit (1 interface for low security setup)
- 2x60 GB (1x40 GB for testing)
- DVD drive (v4.1 delivered on CDROM, but future versions may be shipped on dvd)
Notes:
- A system matching the minimal requirements should be able to serve about 1000 concurrent users accessing typical web applications. Please note that there is absolutely no guarantee about the performance of such a system.
- The actual performance and the average cpu usage very much depend on the web application(s), the protocols (http/https) and the enabled visonysAirlock features. For example, enabling URL encryption or content rewriting normally doubles the CPU load.
- SSL accelerator cards are only recommended for high traffic sites (> 500 https Requests/s). For low to medium traffic systems, Visonys recommends to buy a faster cpu (or more cpus) for the same money.
- With modern hardware, visonysAirlock is able to answer up to 7000 https Requests/second, which corresponds to a network traffic of almost 1 GBit/s!
Hardware RAID Controllers
There is no advantage to use a hardware RAID controller for visonysAirlock.
Visonys recommends to use software RAID instead.
Using the built-in Soft-RAID of visonysAirlock has the following advantages:
- Disk mirroring (RAID 1) for redundant logs and configuration data
- Integrated disk monitoring (automatic logging/alerting in case of disk failure)
- Standard Installation (no additional third party drivers needed)
- Performance similar to HW-RAID
